Departure from Naples every day
Just its name evokes fascination, a dimension and a world away, rich in history and archeology, past and art on the slopes of Vesuvius. Legends tell that the city was founded by Hercules in 1243 bc, but historical sources attribute its foundation to the Osci in XII bc.
Conquered first by the Greeks, then by the Sannites and finally by the Romans, it became a commune of the empire and above all the holiday destination of the Roman aristocratic families.
There are numerous constructions of this period as the thermal complexes, the Theater and the Basilica. It was completely buried under a mud, ashes and lapilli peaks, which formed a high layer from 10 to 25 meters, following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 bc. That layer has protected the ruins of the city over the years.
In the Basilica of Santa Maria in Puglia there are two early Christian sarcophagi that bear witness to the existence of a community of Herculaneum pre-eruption. The ancient Herculaneum was brought to light by pure accident only in 1709 because of some work related to the construction of a well. It should be noted that the ancient Ercolano was not completely dissected because on the same territory is located the new city.
Today, the city of Herculaneum, along with the ruins of Pompeii and Oplonti, is part of the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites archaeological sites.
